Indie folk is a music genre that arose in the 1990s from singer/songwriters in the indie rock community showing heavy influences from folk music scenes of the 50s, 60s and early 70s, country music, and indie rock. A few early artists included Lou Barlow, Beck, Jeff Buckley and Elliott Smith. This genre is often closely related to others including freak folk, psych folk, Baroque pop and New Weird America.[1] The genre has been steadily growing in popularity with bands such as Beirut, Bon Iver, The Decemberists, The Novel Ideas, Okkervil River, Fleet Foxes, Mumford & Sons, The Cave Singers, Horse Feathers, Great Lake Swimmers, Blind Pilot, Loch Lomond and Or, The Whale gaining national attention and appearing at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Sasquatch!, Coachella and the Newport Folk Festival.
